Ogonowski Short on Signatures

According to the Boston Globe, Jim Ogonowski may not have enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Republican Jim Ogonowski, who has the backing of key party members in his bid to challenge US Senator John F. Kerry, could be in danger of stumbling on his first crucial test: collecting 10,000 voter signatures to secure a spot on the GOP primary ballot.

With all the signatures submitted by the campaigns and the exhaustive certification process winding down, Ogonowski still needs at least 259 certified signatures to qualify for the September primary. But even that estimate is low, because he is expected to need a cushion of up to 1,000 more to withstand challenges to the validity of individual signatures that are sure to be mounted by his rival in the GOP primary, Jeff Beatty.

"There appears to be some question as to whether he will make it," said Secretary of State William F. Galvin, a Democrat whose Election Division compiles signature tallies submitted by individual city and town clerks.

Candidates had until May 6 to submit signatures to municipal clerks. Local officials then have until May 27 to certify each signature as valid and submit a total from their communities to Galvin's office.

This news makes me think back to my earlier question about whether Ogonowski should have gone for a rematch against Niki Tsongas. Between this and his getting clobbered by Jeff Beatty in fundraising, Ogonowski's campaign appears to be in trouble.

Matt,

Jim did not get "clobbered" by Jeff Beatty in fundraising. Jeff raised just under a Million dollars in 13 months according to the FEC. Jim raised $290,000 in six weeks of fundraising. Jeff had $80,000 left, Jim had $180,000 cash on hand.

Jim will be on the ballot.

How'bout that? Notice how the R establishment (THE MITTSTER, MUFFY etc.) were raising $$$ at the Taj (THE RITZ) for Jimmy O when he shuld have been collecting signatures instead of $$$...actually he should have collected the R way...pay for them. Can't make up stuff this good, eh, V and Rebel?

He would have only need 150 signatures if he ran for State Rep.

I always find it comical when would-be politicians skip on the signature collection gruntwork so that they can get to the more glorious task of fundraising.

What luck! Ogonowski is nearly a RINO, at least on moral issues. Beatty would be a reliable pro-life vote, and (though he supports continuing the war) he was against our nation-building venture in Iraq before it began- a fact that will appeal to Bay Staters tired of Senator Kerry's phony opposition to the war and support for it from the start.

There appears to be a political Tsunami on the Mass, horizon...time for all political wannabees to put their seat belts on...once in a decade or two type stuff over the next two years! "Thus spoke Zarathusra!" (Muffy's book!)

R's and I's start your engines...

How humiliating! First he gets beaten by GrandMa Tsongas, now he comes up short in signatures, - and some of those are phony! I don’t know what he learned flying AF tankers, - but it ain’t showing up now where the rubber meets the road! Clearly not ready for prime time. In fact, RINO OGO is starting to look a lot like road kill! He’s been wasting our time.

You know, It baffles me that anyone worth their salt at the state party would think Oginowski had or even has a shot at winning this senate race or any statewide election.

The infrastructure clearly isn't there.. what GOP elected officials are going to help him raise the money he needs? Which GOP elected officials are going to lend their political machine to help him get elected?

The fundamental problem with this party is that it's more concerned with filling out a ticket rather than actually focusing on districts and areas where they can win and running QUALITY candidates there. Incramentalism anyone?

I look at races like in Longmeadow, where Mary Rogeness is stepping down and the Republicans have a VERY strong candidate in Bill Scibelli and no one's really doing anything for him. IN a district they've OWNED for years for that matter. It just baffles me.

I just feel like right now, these state races are just a massive waste of time and money and we keep throwing what little money we've got behind these guys that don't have a prayer, not because they're crappy candidates or aren't hard workers, but because there's no infrastructure to actually run these races.

Oginowski is a great guy and has a bright future, but he and the state party would have been much smarter to run him for a state rep or state senate seat which he could have practically waltzed into. In a few years, THEN look at a Senate bid or a rematch with Tsongas. I just genuinely don't get the strategic direction this party's taken over the past few years and if we keep wasting our time on these races we can't win, we'll find ourselves extinct.
